What makes IPL special?

IPL (Full form: Indian Premier League) format follows the rules of the T20 Cricket. T20 cricket is a shortened professional cricket league with 20 overs of gameplay and lasts for about 80-90 minutes, along with a half-an-hour interval in between.

Format

Although the 2023 format is a newer version with new rules, it is similar to the format played in the 2011 IPL. A total of ten teams are divided into two groups of five. A random draw decides the groups and also who plays against whom.

During the group stage, each team is supposed to play 14 matches facing 4 opponent teams within the same group two times each. Out of the two, one is a home game, and one is an away game. Each team also plays against four teams of the other group once and the remaining team twice.

Point table system

According to the IPL points table, the winning team is rewarded two points, and the losing team does not receive any points. In case of a draw or no result, each team gets one point.

Once the group stage is over, a four-game playoff stage observing the page playoff system is conducted. In the playoffs, four games are played.

  • Qualifier 1: Teams ranked 1st Vs. 2nd team
  • Eliminator: 3rd Vs 4th team
  • Qualifier 2: Losing team from Qualifier 1 Vs. The winning team of Eliminator
  • Final: Winner of Qualifier 1 Vs. Winner of Qualifier 2

IPL 2023 rules

Teams can have 2 unsuccessful reviews: The Decision Review System, or DRS, was first introduced in 2018. According to the 2018 system, teams would run out of their viewing review privilege after one unsuccessful attempt. This increased to two in 2022 and will apply in IPL 2023.

In case of a catch dismissal (the batsman is declared out), the new batsman will take the strike unless it’s the last ball of the over.

According to BCCI, a reschedule will be scheduled if a team cannot provide 12 members due to COVID-19. If rescheduling is not possible, then the technical committee of IPL will have the decision power, which will be “final and binding.”

If, for some reason, Super overs or subsequent super overs can’t be completed, then the team with the highest rank in the league will be declared the winner.
