Let us trace the journey of SRH (Full form: Sunrisers Hyderabad) in IPL.

SRH IPL 2013 -2015

After the Deccan Chargers were defunct in 2013, Sunrisers Hyderabad retained 20 players. The team reached the Eliminator playoffs but lost against the Rajasthan Royals. They played a total of 16 games and won 10. They were ranked 4th on the pointers table.

In IPL 2014, the new debutant team in the IPL did not perform well and lost 8 of 14 matches. It ended up being ranked 6th on the points table. Shikar Dhawan led the team as captain and Darren Sammy as vice-captain.

In IPL 2015, SRH retained 13 players and released 11. The team was led by David Warner, and Muttiah Muralitharan was selected as the bowling coach and mentor of the team. The team won a total of 7 matches and lost seven. It ranked 6th on the points table. David Warner received the first orange cap for SRH this season.

IPL Trophy Winners 2016

The winning season for SRH proved to be the maiden season, where it lifted the IPL trophy. They retained 15 players and released nine from the past year’s line-up. They defeated Royal Bangalore Challengers in the finals, won 11 and lost six matches. Bhuvneshwar Kumar snatched the first Purple Cap for Sunrisers Hyderabad.

SRH IPL 2017

SRH spent Rs 45.1 crore, and the team got Purple Cap winner Bhuvneshwar Kumar and Orange Cap winner David Warner in a single season. The team reached the playoffs for the third time this season. They ranked third in the points table. They won 8 matches in the league tournament but lost against Kolkata Knight Riders in the Eliminator playoff.

SRH IPL 2018

This year, the IPL decided that teams could retain a maximum of 5 players because of the 2013 IPL betting scandal. Kane Williamson led the team as David Warner could not participate in the league tournament because of the Australian ball-tampering controversy. 2018 became one of the best seasons for SRH as they became runners-up in the season. They lost in the final match against Chennai Super Kings. They won a total of 10 matches and lost 7. Kane Williamson won the IPL Orange Cup with 735 runs.

SRH IPL 2019 – 2020

In 2022, David Warner was appointed as captain replacing Kane Williamson. The league ended without a win, with the team winning 8 matches and losing an equal number. They beat Royal Bangalore Challengers in the eliminator playoff but lost the qualifier to Delhi Capitals.

In 2019, SRH won a total of 6 games of all matches played. It also faced 9 losses even after it appointed Bhuvneshwar Kumar as vice-captain. They lost in Eliminator against Delhi Capitals. It was in this season that David Warner won the IPL Orange Cap. The team was ranked fourth.

SRH IPL 2021 – 2022

The year started with VVS Laxman stepping down as mentor and changing the coach to Brian Lara for SRH. The team decided its salary cap at Rs68 crore and was able to retain three of its players—Kane Williamson, Abdul Samad, and Umran Malik. The most expensive cricketer in the team was Nicholas Pooran at Rs 10.75 crore from West Indies’ international cricket team. The team faced a major loss, with David Warner, Rashid Khan, and Bhuvneshwar Kumar leaving.

In 2021, SRH added Tom Moody as the team’s Director of cricket. However, due to a lack of good performance and only winning 1 out of 7 total matches played in the beginning, the management decided to replace David Warner with Kane Williamson as captain for the rest of their matches. According to netizens, it was considered the worst season in the history of IPL for SRH.
